|Drug Class: What is Crestor and why is it prescribed?|
|Generic Crestor contains the medicine rosuvastatin, which belongs to a group of medicines known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins.
Generic Crestor is used to modify abnormal levels of fatty substances in the blood called lipids, mainly high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Generic Crestor acts by lowering the levels of all the bad form of cholesterol and raising the level of the good form of cholesterol (HDL).
Generic Crestor is used in combination with a diet plan when changes to diet and exercise alone have failed to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides.
|Crestor Mechanism: How does Crestor work?|
|Generic Crestor contains the active ingredient rosuvastatin calcium, which is a type of medicine called a statin. Generic Crestor works by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver.
For the sake of simplicity, there are two sorts of cholesterol; a bad sort called low density lipoprotein (LDL) and a good sort called high density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is deposited in the arteries and increases the risk of heart disease by clogging and narrowing the arteries, while HDL actually protects the arteries against this.
Generic Crestor decreases the production of LDL cholesterol by blocking the action of the enzyme in the liver (called HMG-CoA reductase) that is responsible for its production. This decreases the amount of cholesterol in the liver cells, which causes them to take up LDL cholesterol from the blood. The decreased cholesterol production and increased removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood ultimately results in lowered blood cholesterol levels.
As the body produces most cholesterol at night, statins are generally more effective if taken at night.
Generic Crestor also causes a small decrease in the production of other bad fats in the blood called triglycerides, and a small increase in the level of HDL cholesterol. This results in lowered levels of bad fats and raised levels of good fats.
Generic Crestor also pays an important role in the prevention of heart disease. Generic Crestor reduces the risk of excess cholesterol being deposited in the major blood vessels of the heart. Any blockage in the blood vessels limits the amount of blood and therefore oxygen being carried to the heart muscle. In severe cases this can result in a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
Generic Crestor also reduces the risk of stroke by decreasing the risk of excess cholesterol being deposited in the blood vessels leading to the brain. These fat deposits can cause blockage and therefore limit blood and oxygen supply to certain parts of the brain.
Generic Crestor is used to reduce the blood levels of cholesterol and other fats when these cannot be lowered by diet and exercise alone. This helps to reduce the risk of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and the problems described above that this can cause. It is important to continue to follow a cholesterol-lowering diet and exercise regime while taking Generic Crestor.
|Crestor Dosage: How should you take Crestor|
|The patient should be placed on a standard cholesterol-lowering diet before receiving Generic Crestor and should continue on this diet during treatment. Generic Crestor can be administered as a single dose at any time of day, with or without food.

Generic Crestor Preparations:
|Possible food and drug interactions when taking Crestor|
|Tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with Generic Crestor. Likewise, always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines during treatment with Generic Crestor.
There may be an increased risk of side effects on the muscles (myopathy) if Generic Crestor is taken with any of the following medicines:
The anti-blood-clotting effect of anticoagulants such as warfarin may be increased by Generic Crestor. For this reason, if you are taking an anticoagulant your doctor may want to check your blood-clotting time (INR) when you start or stop treatment with Generic Crestor, and if your dose is changed.
Antacids for indigestion, such as aluminium and magnesium hydroxide, may decrease the absorption of Generic Crestor from the gut. This can be avoided if antacids are not taken within two hours of taking Generic Crestor.
Erythromycin may decrease the blood level of Generic Crestor.
Generic Crestor may increase the blood levels of hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.

|Most Important Fact about Generic Crestor
It is advised to report promptly unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, particularly if accompanied by malaise or fever.
When taking Generic Crestor with an aluminum and magnesium hydroxide combination antacid, the antacid should be taken at least 2 hours after Generic Crestor administration.
Generic Crestor precautions if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
It is not known whether Generic Crestor is excreted in human milk. Studies in lactating rats have demonstrated that Generic Crestor is secreted into breast milk at levels 3 times higher than that obtained in the plasma. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from Generic Crestor a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or administration of Generic Crestor taking into account the importance of the drug to the lactating woman.
Special warnings about Generic Crestor
Generic Crestor may very rarely have side effects on the muscles. For this reason you should inform your doctor immediately if you experience any muscular symptoms such as pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness while taking Generic Crestor, particularly if it is accompanied by a fever or feeling generally unwell. Your doctor may need to check for side effects on the muscles by taking a blood test to measure the level of a compound called creatinine kinase in your blood. If this is the case, the test should not be done following strenuous exercise.
Generic Crestor is not recommended for use in children.
You should have blood tests to monitor your liver function (liver function tests) before starting treatment and regularly throughout treatment with Generic Crestor.
You should continue eating a cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment with Generic Crestor. Discuss this with your doctor.
People who are taking a 40 mg dose of Generic Crestor should have their kidney function monitored.
A 40 mg dose of Generic Crestor should only be used in people with very high cholesterol levels and a high risk of heart disease, whose cholesterol is not lowered sufficiently with 20 mg and when routine follow-up can be performed. Generic Crestor should not be used in Japanese or Chinese people, moderately decreased kidney function, hypothyroidism, alcohol abuse, people with a personal or family history of hereditary muscle disorders, people taking fibrate medicines or those with a history of muscle side effects on previous statin or fibrate medicines.
Why Generic Crestor should not be prescribed?

Common side effects of Generic Crestor may include:
Serious & Rare side effects of Generic Crestor may include:
Liver failure caused by Generic Crestor is very rare. More often, Generic Crestor can cause increase in liver tests due to injury to the liver. The test levels usually return to normal with continued therapy, but if the level is over three times the upper limit of normal or baseline, practitioners usually stop Generic Crestor. Periodic measurement of liver tests is recommended for all statins. For Generic Crestor, these tests should be obtained before therapy is started, twelve weeks after therapy is started, when the dose is increased, if there is a medical concern, and periodically during prolonged treatment.
Rhabdomyolysis is a very rare but serious side effect of Generic Crestor therapy. When used alone the frequency of rhabdomyolysis due to Generic Crestor is less than one percent. Rhabdomyolysis is a process in which there is severe injury to muscles leading to severe pain and the release of muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood. Myoglobin may cause kidney failure. To prevent the occurrence of rhabdomyolysis, patients taking Generic Crestor who develop unexplained muscle pain, weakness or tenderness should report the symptoms to their provider.
Generic Crestor may cause reversible increases in the amount of protein excreted by the kidneys, and in some patients kidney failure has occurred as a result. This effect depends on the dose and occurs more often at the 40 mg dose.
