|Possible food and drug interactions when taking Zocor|
Generic Zocor/Simvastatin is generally well- tolerated. Generic Zocor medication should be used with caution in patients with alcohol or other liver diseases. Persistently abnormal liver tests during treatment are rare, but may lead to a discontinuation of the medication. Rare cases of muscle inflammation (myositis) and breakdown have been reported with Generic Zocor/Simvastatin. Muscle breakdown causes the release of muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood and kidney tubules, resulting in acute kidney failure. The risk of muscle breakdown is increased when Generic Zocor/Simvastatin is given together with other medications such as cyclosporine (Sandimmune), gemfibrozil (Lopid), erythromycin and nicotinic acid. Generic Zocor/Simvastatin may interact with cholestyramine (Questran), warfarin (Coumadin), and cimetidine (Tagamet) to alter the blood levels of these medicines.
When Coumadin is given together with simvastatin, blood clotting times require monitoring to avoid excessive blood thinning and bleeding. Simvastatin should not be used in children. Generic Zocor/Simvastatin is not habit forming. Combining it with the following drugs increases the chance of muscle damage: Amiodarone (Cordarone), Clarithromycin (Biaxin), Clofibrate (Atromid-S), Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), Erythromycin (PCE and others), Fenofibrate (Tricor), Gemfibrozil (Lopid), Itraconazole (Sporanox), Ketoconazole (Nizoral), Nefazodone (Serzone), Nicotinic acid or niacin (Niaspan), Protease inhibitors (used in the treatment of HIV), including Agenerase, Crixivan, Fortovase, Invirase, Norvir, and Viracept, Verapamil (Calan), If you are taking Generic Zocor with any of these drugs (or with large quantities of grapefruit juice) alert your doctor immediately at the first sign of muscle pain or weakness. If you need to take erythromycin, Biaxin, Nizoral, or Sporanox, the doctor may temporarily take you off buying Generic Zocor.
