|Bentyl is prescribed for the treatment of functional bowel/irritable bowel syndrome (abdominal pain, accompanied by diarrhea and constipation associated with stress). Heat prostration (fever and heat stroke due to decreased sweating) can occur with use of Bentyl drug in hot weather. If symptoms occur, stop taking the Bentyl doses and notify your doctor immediately.|

Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is an anticholinergic drug, a Bentyl medication that reduces the effect of acetylcholine, a chemical released from nerves that stimulates muscles, by blocking the receptors for acetylcholine on smooth muscle (a type of muscle).
Bentyl also has a direct relaxing effect on smooth muscle. Bentyl is used to treat or prevent spasm in the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract in the irritable bowel syndrome.
