Drug Class: What is Naprosyn and why is Naprosyn prescribed?
Naprosyn reduces inflammation caused by the bodys own immune system and is an effective painkiller.
Naprosyn belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Naprosyn works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
Naprosyn relieves pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and juvenile (childhood) arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis), tendinitis, bursitis, and acute gout.
Drug Mechanism: How does Naprosyn work?
Naprosyn works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase.
Cyclo-oxygenase is an enzyme that is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced in response to injury or certain diseases and cause pain, swelling and inflammation.
As Naprosyn stops the production of prostaglandins, it is effective at relieving pain and inflammation and fever.
Naprosyn was approved by the FDA in December, 1991.
Dosage: How should you take Naprosyn?
Naprosyn may be taken with food or an antacid, and with a full glass of water to avoid stomach upset. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach.
If you are using Naprosyn for arthritis, it should be taken regularly; take it exactly as prescribed.
Do not crush or chew the extended-release forms of Naprosyn (e.g., Naprelan, EC Naprosyn, others). Swallow them whole. These are specially formulated to release slowly in the body. Ask your pharmacist if you do not know if you have an extended-release formulation.
